Broadcasting today is a challenging and complex career, and in order to meet those challenges, students must acquire sufficient education and experience. Broadcast education prepares an individual for a meaningful career in the field of electronic media.
Career Opportunities in Broadcasting
The field is demanding higher levels of training in all areas and the broadcasting sequence at Pittsburg State University is designed to equip students with knowledge and experience to meet those demands. Our program is comprehensive and prepares students for careers in:
- news reporting and editing
- audio and video production
- remote sports production
- sales
- computer technology
The broadcasting emphasis offers practical experience through our classroom labs, and CAPS-13 (Cable Access Pitt State) our student-produced cable television station. Our students learn to use studio and portable video equipment, editing consoles, and a complete radio laboratory with two audio boards, including a state-of-the-art digital audio production facility.
The university also operates KRPS, a 100,000 watt FM public radio station, which also provides internship and employment opportunities.
Membership in the Student Association of Broadcasters enables students to obtain additional experience by producing their own campus-related programming. Members also may enter their work in state and national competitions. Internships also are available to students at area radio and television stations.

Students have the opportunity to provide input and watch productions change and evolve.
