Scholarship RULES

DESCRIPTION

The Joplin Tri-State Chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) annually awards four $100 scholarships to members (regular, educator, associate, or student status) to partially pay for the examination fee for the CMA exam.  The goal for the scholarship program is to encourage and enable members to become CMAs within 13 months of award of the scholarships.

WHO CAN APPLY?

Applicants who have been members of IMA for a minimum of two years (24 months) by the application deadline for the scholarship may be awarded the scholarship.  Applicants must also be current members of the Joplin Tri-State Chapter of IMA, in good standing, at the date of the application and the date of the payment of the scholarship.  Members must certify that they are not eligible for reimbursement or payment from their employer for the examination fee for the CMA exam to be eligible for this scholarship.

AWARD CRITERIA

To be considered for the scholarship, members must submit an application to the VP of Professional Education (the application must be physically/electronically received) no later than April 30th.   The scholarship applications will be reviewed by the Award Committee and will be awarded for the following chapter fiscal year (July through June) at the general membership meeting in May (typically the third Tuesday of May).

Applications will be rank ordered by the award committee based on a points system.  The highest ranking applicant will be awarded the number of scholarships needed to complete the CMA exam, i.e. if the applicant has passed two parts of the exam they will receive two of the four available scholarships (assuming there are no waived parts involved).  If there are scholarships remaining after the highest ranked applicant is awarded the number needed to finish the exam the next highest ranked applicant will be awarded up to the number of scholarships needed to complete the CMA and so on until the four scholarships have been awarded.

A single member can be awarded any number of scholarships (one to three) for a fiscal year irregardless of the total number of applications received by the deadline date.  A single member can be awarded all four scholarships for the fiscal year only if that member is the sole applicant by the deadline date.  Actual payment of the scholarship will be made as a reimbursement to the member upon proof of passing a part of the exam during the award period (July through June following the award in May).  The awardee has until June 30 of the year following the date of award to complete the number of parts of the exam for which the scholarship is awarded.  Any amount of the scholarship award that is not eligible for payment (test taken and proof of passing presented to the Award Committee) by June 30 of the year following the award will be forfeited.  Scholarship funds cannot be used to pay the fee for any waived portion of the exam (typically applies to a person who is already certified and is not required to take a portion of the exam).

Points will be awarded as follows:

PARTS ALREADY PASSED:  The number of parts taken and passed (waived portions do not count) multiplied by 30 (maximum of 90 points).

IMA MEMBERSHIP:  Total number of full years (partial years truncated) as a regular, educator or associate IMA member prior to the application deadline date multiplied by 10.  No maximum.

IMA SERVICE:  Total number of full years (partial years truncated) of service in any official position on the Chapter executive board prior to the application deadline date multiplied by 10.  Service in multiple positions during a year only counts as one year.  Maximum points cannot exceed those awarded for IMA membership above.

STATEMENT OF PROFESSIONAL GOALS:  Reviewed by the award committee and used to break ties from point calculations above.

AWARD COMMITTEE

The award committee consists of the Chapter President, VP of Administration & Finance and VP of Professional Education.  The VP of Professional Education is the Chairperson of the award committee.  He/she is responsible for receiving all applications by the application deadline, ensuring all applications received by the deadline are reviewed by the committee, and presentation of the names of winners to the Chapter at the May meeting.
