Dear Transfer Student,
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Pittsburg State says, “Greetings!” We’re pleased that you’re interested in our university--and especially in elementary education. A link within this letter shows our program guide with courses required for teaching at the kindergarten through sixth grade level. Minors are also available that would add to your expertise or could provide special endorsements on your teaching license. These include Special Education, English for Speakers of Other Languages, and Middle Level second teaching fields in specific content areas.
As a transfer student to the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, you will be in excellent company! At least half of our graduating “future teachers” come to us from community colleges or other universities. Our faculty and staff work hard to make this transition successful. When you transfer to our program, if you have completed an “Introduction to Education” course with field experience (that involved 33 or more hours in elementary setting), you will enroll in CURIN 307 Clinical Experience, a 1 credit hour, (This course is not offered in summer.) This course provides background on our program’s knowledge base and electronic portfolio requirements. If you have not completed an "Introduction to Education" course at another institution, you will enroll in our CURIN 261 Explorations in Education, a 3 credit hour course. This course introduces our program and provides you with a 33 hour field experience in an elementary classroom.
To make your initial visit to our department most productive, we ask you to bring an “unofficial” copy of your transcripts. When you declare a major of elementary education K-6 (official title “Early Childhood-Late Childhood”), you’ll be assigned an advisor to guide and advocate for you, in every way possible, from enrollment through graduation.
PROGRAM GUIDE: This guide lists requirements for general education and for our elementary education - K-6 major. As a transfer student, you may have completed courses titled differently from ours. We’ll examine these for approved substitutions. For course equivalencies, check the PSU web-site (www.pittstate.edu), clicking on “prospective students,” “transfer admissions,” and finally “transfer equivalency guides.”
We hope this information helps. If you have questions or wish to visit us, please call our office: 620-235-4508 or 620-235-6105. The Department of Curriculum and Instruction looks forward to working with you. COME SEE US!
Best wishes from the faculty and staff
