All Classified Senate meetings are open to any interested employees of PSU. You do NOT have to be a Senator…everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.

President Lunday called the October 11, 2006 meeting of the Pittsburg State University Classified Senate to order in the Governors Room of the Overman Student Center.

Senators Present:  Sue Ann Barnes, John Bartels, Kathy Benard, Dee Buffalo, David Hartman, Pam Henderson, Dave Hornback, Tim James, Kathi Lunday, Leigh Ann Martin, Tracey Mussa, Kathy Neely, Trish Peak, Wendy Peterson, Joyce Row, Treva Sherman, Marty Stidham, Heather Winzer, Mary Wolfe, Stacy Wolownik, Sondra Wood

Senators Excused:  None

Non-Senators Present:  Jerry Duvall, Dr. Howard Smith

Minutes:  Under old business, the vacation leave survey information will be used during COBO discussions instead of COBA.  Motion was made, seconded and passed to accept the minutes of the September meeting.

Treasurer’s report:  September 2006 budget account had a beginning balance of $1976.38, less expenses of $9.20 for an ending balance of $1967.18.  Donation account $28.54 with no activity.  Motion to accept treasurer’s report was made, seconded and passed. 

Position Paper:  Mary Wolfe reported that the committee decided to remove the cap off the pay matrix and add that it automatically be funded every year.  They will be working with area legislators to figure out which of the suggestions has the best possibility of passing the legislature.

Election Committee:  Tracey Mussa from Curriculum and Instruction has agreed to fill the Instruction area senate vacancy.

Legislative Committee:  The legislative forum was held prior to the senate meeting.  Legislators participating included Kansas Senator Umbarger, Representatives Proehl, Oharah, Grant, Menghini and Representative candidate Decker.  The panel fielded questions prepared by the committee.  To find out who represents your area, go online to www.kslegislature.org.

Public Relations:  Class Act is now on the website under news.

Advocacy Committee:  The committee has not met, but Dave Hartman met with Dr. Smith regarding the committee meeting with administration regularly.  Dr. Smith was very open to meetings and to keeping open communication lines.  The committee will meet in the next week or two.

Welcoming Committee:  No report.

Senate Bill 74 Research Committee:     Research is being done to find out what the problems and concerns are from other places.  Then the committee will figure out if those issues could affect us and how.  The state has hired an outside consultant to look at the option of a state-wide pay matrix.

Other University Committees:    No reports.

Old Business:  Brad Hodson, Vice President of University Advancement, has said senate funds can be used for whatever we choose, but cannot rollover at the end of the fiscal year.  Discussion ensued regarding starting a scholarship.

New Business:  None.

Good of the Order:    Concerns were voiced about employees being uncertain whether they could or could not attend senate meetings and events and also what senate events they could attend.  The university administration is figuring out and dealing with any situations that might be causing the concerns.

Motion to adjourn was made, seconded and passed.
