President Lunday called the September 13, 2006 meeting of the Pittsburg State University Classified Senate to order at 1:30 p.m. in 109 Grubbs Hall.
Senators Present: John Bartels, Kathy Benard, Dee Buffalo, David Hartman, Pam Henderson, Dave Hornback, Kathi Lunday, Leigh Martin, Kathy Neely, Trish Peak, Wendy Peterson, Joyce Row, Treva Sherman, Marty Stidham, Heather Winzer, Mary Wolfe, Stacy Wolownik, Sondra Wood
Senators Excused: Sue Ann Barnes, Tim James
Non-Senators Present: Roberta Bigelow, Kit Collins, Jerry Duvall, Yvonne Gaddy, Rita Hardesty, Cassie Hombs, Dr. Howard Smith, Beth Uhler
Minutes: Heather Winzer and Joyce Row were added as being excused from the July meeting. Motion was made, seconded and passed to accept the minutes of the July meeting.
Treasurer’s report: July 2006 budget account had a beginning balance of $2000, less expenses of $0 for an ending balance of $2000. Donation account $28.54 with no activity. August 2006 budget account had a beginning balance of $2000, less expenses of $23.62 for an ending balance of $1976.38. Donation account $28.54 with no activity. Motion to accept Treasurer’s report was made, seconded and passed.
Position Paper: No report.
Election Committee: Kelly Borden (Instruction) resigned and notices have been sent to that respective area.
Legislative Committee: A Legislative Forum will be held on Wednesday, October 11th at 1:30 p.m. in the Governors Room of the Student Center. All classified employees are invited to listen to the Kansas House of Representative candidates from Districts 1, 2, 3, 4, 7 and 8, as well as, Kansas Senators Jim Barone and Dwayne Umbarger (invitations have been extended, but confirmations have yet to be received). Time constraints will not allow for questions from the floor, but questions can be emailed to Treva Sherman or Heather Winzer.
Public Relations: No report.
Advocacy Committee: No report.
Welcoming Committee: No report.
Senate Bill 74 Research Committee: Marty Stidham should be added to the list of members.
Other University Committees: No reports.
Old Business: Results from the vacation leave survey were distributed. 51% of the surveys were returned and 71% preferred proposal #2 to 29% for proposal #1. Mr. Patterson will be using this information during COBO discussions with the Board of Regents.
New Business: University wide recycling committees are being formed. If you would like to volunteer, notify Kathi Lunday.
The Student Government, Classified Senate and Unclassified Senate Presidents have begun meeting on a regular basis.
Copies of the memo from Dr. Howard Smith regarding Classified Senate meeting attendance were distributed to anyone who did not receive a copy.
Good of the Order: None.
Motion to adjourn was made, seconded and passed.
President Bryant and Dr. Smith presented an overview of the university’s master plan. Dr. Smith introduced the new quarterly classified employee newsletter titled “Class Act” to help improve communications. The administration’s top three focus areas for the 2006/2007 year will be: 1) Position vacancy procedures, hiring practices and the recruitment of qualified applicants, 2) Deferred maintenance and 3) Managing energy and being good environmental stewards by forming a resource conservation task force.
