Donation account had a beginning balance of $28.54, with a donation of $1.46 for an ending balance of $30. Motion to accept treasurer’s report was made, seconded and passed.
Position Paper: Rep. Menghini has our information, but has not decided where to introduce it for the best results.
Election Committee: No report.
Legislative Committee: Day on the Hill will be February 5 & 6 in Topeka. The committee is scheduling appointment times with key committee members. Wichita State and Emporia State Universities will be taking part. Eight volunteers are needed to attend from PSU. Those volunteering were: David Hartman, Kathi Lunday, Heather Winzer, Treva Sherman, David Hornback and Pam Henderson. Others would check with their supervisors and notify Treva Sherman by January 17th. Kathy Bernard will work on getting a list of current PSU students from the represented areas of each legislator to give to them during the appointments. David Hartman will handle transportation needs for the group. The State of the State address is scheduled for 7 p.m. on January 10 by Governor Sebelius. A motion was made, seconded and passed to pay for meals and hotel expenses for those attending Day on the Hill in Topeka on February 5 & 6.
Public Relations: They are in the process of finishing up the next issue of the Class Act newsletter.
Advocacy Committee: They will meet after Day on the Hill.
Welcoming Committee: No report.
Senate Bill 74 Research Committee: Attempts to reach the University of Kansas’s classified officers have failed. It was suggested that one of their university administrators that visited with us previously be contacted.
Other University Committees:
- Joint University Student Publications Board – Kathy Neely reported that their budget had been reviewed and employee contracts were renewed.
- Energy & Resource Conservation – Stacy Wolownik stated the committee had been presented with its charge and a retreat was scheduled for January 11th from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
- Parking Committee – Parking lots have not been paved due to funding limitations.
- Safety Committee – In the university’s rules and regulations, it states that bicycles are prohibited from the sidewalks. No new regulation is needed.
- Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee – Nature Reach has a prairie dog and it is alive and well.
Legislative Update: Dr. Smith is in Topeka since the legislature is in session. The state has appropriated funds for the state salary study. Howard Smith’s website is http://www.pittstate.edu/pres/apll.html and provides legislative updates regularly. Also on the website are his duties including his role in working with the classified senate and staff. Listed below are a few:
- Serves as legislative liaison for the university (including classified staff) in Topeka and Washington D.C..
- Serves as the university administration's representative in local activities with the city of Pittsburg, the Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce and other southeast Kansas initiatives.
- Serves as liaison for the president with the Classified Senate.
- Coordinates special projects and initiatives (such as the Class Act newsletter) as directed by the President.
- Monitors university committees through the president's office.
Old Business: It was mentioned that during Day on the Hill legislators need to be reminded that classified employees have not received their increase in vacation leave because of the wording of the bill. An amendment to adjust the wording would allow the raises to proceed.
New Business: The inclement weather policy for PSU is that the university closes at the discretion of the President. If the university is not closed and a classified employee does not report in, then vacation leave should be reported for that time. This topic was referred to the advocacy committee to research what other universities do when they close down and how their employees report that time.
Marty White volunteered to fill the vacancy on the athletic fee council.
Good of the Order: Kathi Lunday has extra classified senate handbooks if anyone would like one.
Motion to adjourn was made, seconded and passed.
Respectfully submitted,
Pam Henderson
