President David Hartman called the November 14, 2007 meeting of the Pittsburg State University Classified Senate to order in the Inaugural Room of the Overman Student Center.

Senators Present:  Sue Ann Barnes, John Bartels, Dee Buffalo, Wylie Degruson, Jerry Duvall, Tina Gregory, David Hartman, Pam Henderson, Kathi Lunday, Leigh Ann Martin, Kathy Neely, Debbie Sullins, Josh Tucker, Marty White, Mary Wolfe

Senators Excused:  Jill Allen, John Foster, Dave, Hornback, Tracey Mussa

Senators Absent:  Stacy Wolownik

Non-Senators Present:  Becky Moore, Dr. Howard Smith

Minutes:  Under new business, funding was approved for Kathi Lunday and Tracey Mussa for October 15th, not November 15th.  Motion was made, seconded and passed to accept the minutes as corrected.

Treasurer’s report:  The budget account had a beginning balance of $1,590.90, with expenditures of $165.44, for an ending balance of $1,425.46.  Donation account had a beginning and ending balance of $30.66.  Motion was made, seconded and passed to accept the October treasurer’s report.

Position Paper:  John Bartels reported that the committee had met with Representatives Menghini and Grant as well as a couple members of the Board of Regents over the last month.  Our position paper was taken to the joint council meeting on November 5th.  A copy of the joint position paper was distributed for review.  University of Kansas is part of this paper as far as employee benefits, etc. are concerned.  However, KU is not involved where pay raises for classified employees are concerned.  Day on the Hill has been scheduled for February 4-5, 2008.

Election Committee:  There is an at-large vacancy.  Notices have been sent out.  If you know someone interested in serving, please contact Jill Allen.

Legislative Committee:  The Council of Presidents met on November 14th and their agenda contained the Council of Classified Senate Presidents recommendation for representation on committees involving classified employees’ issues.  COBA has on their agenda to discuss our vacation leave proposal.

Public Relations:  No report.

Advocacy Committee:  No report.

Other University Committees:  President Hartman will be contacting classified representatives on all university committees to encourage them to report to the Classified Senate on their committee meetings.

Senate President’s Report from Meetings with Dr. Bryant:  Dr. Bryant thought our position paper covered what we were doing.  President Hartman informed Dr. Bryant that the Classified Senate Presidents are requesting they be able to attend Board of Regents’ meetings on a monthly basis to represent classified employees.

Legislative Update:  Dr. Smith stated the power plant situation will most likely play a role in this upcoming legislative session.  The federal government is pulling back on their highway funding which means the state will have to fund those projects.  The appropriations committee is meeting on December 17th to look at the state revenues.  Dr. Smith will attend that meeting to see what is being forecast for the budget.

Old Business:  President Hartman proposed there be no full senate meeting in December, but the executive committee would still meet.  Motion was made, seconded and passed to not hold a December full senate meeting.

New Business:  A concern was expressed because an employee’s daughter is a non-degree seeking high school guest student and is not eligible for the tuition assistance program.  The situation was referred to the Advocacy committee to look into.

President Hartman would like to see our budget increased since the Classified Senate Presidents will be doing more traveling and there will be additional expenditures.  He is contacting the appropriate individuals to look into this.

Good of the Order:  Kathy Neely introduced Becky Moore, a GA in the Housing office, who will be attending a Senate meeting or two as part of her practicum.

“No weapons” signs will be going up on campus soon.

The Crisis Resource Management committee will meet next week.

It was suggested to our parking committee representative to look into signage coming from the parking lot behind Grubbs Hall onto Williams Street.  Currently, there is nothing signaling that Williams Street is one-way from the parking lot.

Discussion ensued regarding calling and holding special meetings.  The position paper vote at the recent special meeting was 10-4 for the proposed paper.

Motion to adjourn was made, seconded and passed.

Respectfully submitted,

Pam Henderson

Acting Secretary
