Pittsburg State Rugby Football Club (RFC) was established in 1972. Pitt State RFC competes in the USA Rugby Men’s Division III and is a member of the Western Rugby Football Union and the Heart of America Rugby Football Sub-union. Pittsburg State Rugby averages twenty-five members annually and is always looking for more players.
The Pitt State Rugby season is in the fall from August through October and in the spring from February through May. Pitt State RFC plays Heart of America matches in the fall season. The winner of the Heart Division III Merit Table advances to the Western RFC Championship Tournament in the spring; where the best teams in six men’s divisions and three women’s divisions compete for the Western Championship in each division. The winning teams from the Western Championship Tournament move on to compete for the USA Rugby National Championship.
Pittsburg State RFC is a sanctioned Pittsburg State University club and also accepts club members from the community. All are welcome no experience is necessary.
Rugby is a contact sport, in which all players run the ball and play both offense and defense. There are positions for every body type and cardiovascular fitness is required by every player.
Practices are held Tuesday and Thursday afternoons/evenings and matches are played on Saturdays.
The playing field called the “Pitch” in the sport of rugby is located on the northeast corner of Rouse and Ford Streets across from the Kansas Technology Center and just north of the Veterans Memorial Amphitheater. There is no cost to attend a rugby match and all are welcome.
