The Department of English offers work leading to the degrees Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Education.

Bachelor of Arts

A student seeking a Bachelor of Arts with a major in English will choose one of the three emphases described below. All candidates for this degree must complete a minor. For those in the technical writing emphasis, a minor in a technical field is recommended. All students seeking this degree should see page 40 for requirements for all baccalaureate degrees and page 41 for general education degree requirements. Persons completing this degree who plan to teach must complete certification requirements.

Bachelor of Science in Education

The Bachelor of Science in Education degree with a major in English is designed primarily to train prospective English teachers. A student pursuing the degree will follow the program outlined below. A minor is not required.

Honors Courses

Any courses numbered 300-799 in the Description of Courses may be taken for departmental honors, except ENGL 579 Supervised Student Teaching and Follow-Up of Teachers.

General Education

The following courses may be counted for general education credit in the humanities area: ENGL 113 General Literature, ENGL 221 Introduction to Western Literature, ENGL 260 Short Fiction, ENGL 309 The Bible as Literature, and ENGL 315 Mythology.

Required Writing Courses for Freshmen

Because students need to develop and maintain writing skills in their first two years of college, it is the policy of Pittsburg State University that all full-time freshmen and sophomore students shall be continuously enrolled in an appropriate writing course until they have completed the Writing Intensive series of courses. In their first semester, full-time freshmen shall enroll in ENGL 101 or ENGL 103 English Composition, unless given credit by examination. Students who have successfully completed the appropriate course shall then immediately take a Writing Intensive (WI) course in each of the next 2 semesters. Those students who
took ENGL 101 English Composition shall complete the WI series by enrolling in ENGL 299 Introduction to Research Writing. Those students who took ENGL 103 English Composition complete the sequence after the second WI course; they do not need to enroll in ENGL 299 Introduction to Research Writing.
Part-time students shall complete the above sequence before they have accumulated 55 credit hours.

GRADUATE DEGREES

The Department of English offers work leading to the Master of Arts degree, and, in cooperation with the School of Education, the Specialist in Education degree for junior/community college teachers.

Master of Arts

The applicant for admission to study for the degree Master of Arts with a major in English shall present evidence of successful completion of at least 24 semester hours of undergraduate English above the freshman level, preferably including survey courses in both English and American literature; one course in English literature before 1750; a course in Shakespeare; one course in linguistics, modern grammar, or the history of the English language; and one course in advanced composition.

Specialist in Education: English

The degree of Specialist in Education with English as the major teaching field for community college teachers is offered by the Department of Special Services and Administrative Studies in cooperation with the Department of English. Applicants for this program should consult the graduate advisor in the English Department to plan a course of study. The programs are flexible enough to enable all candidates to obtain the maximum strengthening in the subject matter of their teaching fields.
Applicants for admission to study for the degree Specialist in Education who hold a master's degree in English shall be considered to have passed their preliminary examination. If candidates are admitted who hold the master's degree in another discipline, they shall, within their first enrollment, complete satisfactorily a preliminary examination based on a reading list.
