2007-2009 University Catalog

Advanced Placement

Military Service

In general the university follows the recommendations of the Office of Educational Credits listed by the American Council of Education (ACE).  Advanced standing credits will be given to veterans for formal service school courses on the basis of the ACE.  Credit earned by correspondence and/or extension is limited to a maximum of 30 hours to be allowed for graduation.

AP Credit

Pittsburg State University cooperates in the Advanced Placement program sponsored by the College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB).  Subject to department approval, credits are typically granted for course areas in which a student has completed AP examinations with scores of 3 and above.  The Department of Biology requires scores of 4 and above.

The results of AP examinations must be sent to PSU directly from CEEB.  There is no fee charged by PSU for evaluating or posting the results of AP examinations.

College Level Examination Program (CLEP)

The general examination and subject examinations are accepted at PSU to validate life experience for academic credit provided the credit does not represent a duplication of credit previously earned.  Academic departments determine the norm group and the percentile at or above which credit will be awarded.  Typically, credit is awarded for scores starting at the 50th percentile.  There is no fee for evaluating or posting the results of the CLEP general examination.

Departmental Examinations

Departmental examinations are available for both placement and credit and are available by special arrangement.  Arrangements to take departmental examinations may be initiated through the individual academic department involved.  No fee is charged for departmental examinations.

The Department of English offers the Writing Skills Assessment examination for interested students.  Students who score at least a 4 are eligible for credit for ENGL 101 English Composition.  In addition, credit for ENGL 101 English Composition is offered to students who score a 27 or higher on the ACT English sub score.  For more information regarding the examination procedures in the English Department, please visit

Retro credits are available through the Modern Languages and Literatures Department.  Students must sign up for the retro-credits program through the department during the first three weeks of the semester in which they take their first language course. That course determines their entry level and the maximum credits they can earn through retro-credits. Transfer students who took language courses at another university or college are not eligible.  The maximum number of hours in which students receive retro-credits is 15.  For more information, please visit www.pittstate.edu/flang.
