CARRD Paraprofessional Tutors
Background:
Tutoring is a vital part of the CARRD’s Identification and Intervention Program (IIP). The IIP is used in school systems to identify first-grade students at risk for developing reading difficulties and to provide training to these students in an effort to prevent the development of reading difficulties. Children are identified as at-risk through the use of the Reading Screening. The Reading Screening serves to both identify at-risk children and to identify the specific areas in which the children may need additional assistance. Once identified, tutors work with these students on a one-on-one basis, 2-3 times per week throughout the school year to strengthen their phonological processing skills. Through the use of excellent tutors, the IIP has been successful in helping at risk students become competent readers who do not experience reading failure!
Schools Served:
The IIP currently works with 13 schools throughout southeast Kansas, including: Lakeside Elementary, Westside Elementary, Meadowlark Elementary, and St. Mary’s Elementary in Pittsburg; Frank Layden Elementary in Frontenac; RV Haderlein Elementary in Girard; Cherokee Elementary; McCune Elementary; Weir Elementary; Riverton Elementary; Lincoln Elementary in Baxter Springs; and Spring Grove Elementary and Liberty Elementary in Galena. Each academic year, over 80 first-grade students identified as at-risk have received the training component of the IIP. This number continues to grow as the CARRD expands its services to additional school systems across Kansas and Missouri.
