When:  Wed, April 25 2018 07:30 PM - 08:45 PM
Location:  Bicknell Family Center for the Arts, Linda & Lee Scott Performance Hall
Address:  Bicknell Family Center for the Arts, 1711 S. Homer, Pittsburg KS 66762

The big band will open with a great Basie work titled Told You So with a flute solo by Colton Sprenkle and a trombone solo by Chris Goddard. Maintaining a traditional jazz library the band will follow with a work from the Stan Kenton book and recently performed by the Stan Kenton Alumni Band. It is titled A Little Minor Booze.

Next is the jazz combo made up like the big band of music majors, minors and non-majors. The small group works out their own arrangements. There will be standards like Thelonious Monk’s Well You Needn’t, a Radiohead work called Nude, and the classic Star Eyes.

The big band takes center stage with a Michael Brecker fusion piece titled Its Bynne Reel. A contemporary Irish reel with a fusion sound and featuring PSU’s own fiddler and conductor of the Southeast Kansas Symphony Dr. Raul Munguia.

The combo comes back on with two standards, Oleo by Sonny Rollins and Laura with music by David Rasksin. They will close out their set with Tom Harrell’s See You at Seven.

The concert closes with two works. First will be a Pat Metheny work Et Si C’etait la Fin. A fusion piece with a little new age tossed into the mix. It is a beautiful lyrical work typical of Metheny’s expressive lines. The final work is a send off for four of our players that are playing in their final jazz concert. Drummers Michael Walker and Tyler Holloway, guitarist Justin Garrison and saxophonist Jose Salazar. To send them on their way the band will play a work that has solos for everyone. It is a great Bill Potts arrangement of George Gershwin’s classic for his opera Porgy and Bess, Oh Lawd, I’m On My Way.

This is a concert of everyone. It will have you tapping your foot, swaying in your seats and humming along if you remember the classics.
