New Student To-Do List

• Buy Your Books. Stop by the Gorilla Bookstore by Barnes and Noble and pick up your books for the semester. Try to find used books, but you will have to be quick to nab them; used books are considerably less expensive than brand new books. While you’re there, check out the selection of official PSU apparel and memorabilia.

• Pick Up Your Parking Permit.  Be sure to pick up your parking permit from University Police and Parking Services as soon as possible. Parking on campus without a permit can carry a fine of up to 15 dollars for each offense.

• Hunt Down Your Classrooms. It’s a good idea to find out beforehand where your classes will be and how long it will take you to get from one to the next.

• See What Jobs are Available. Many students find part-time employment both on and off campus through Student Employment, a part of Career Services, in the Student Welcoming Center.

• Get to Know Your Roommate. It can be hard to suddenly have to share a small space with someone you don’t know. Spend some “quality” time with them by setting up ground rules you both can live with. It is better to work this out now before problems arise. After all, this person may soon become one of your closest friends.

• Familiarize Yourself with the Area Around Campus. Since you are planning to spend the next four years of your life in Pittsburg, Kansas, get to know the community. Check out where the good restaurants are, who delivers pizza after midnight, etc. Find out what other opportunities exist in Pittsburg.

• Spend Time on Your Floor. You finally got it: your very own place! Don’t forget to meet your new neighbors and, most of all, your Resident Assistant (RA) who will be a terrific source of support and advice throughout the upcoming year.

• Don’t Stop Asking Questions. Remember, no question is ever stupid... It’s the only way we learn about our new surroundings. No matter what you ask, the PSU Faculty and Staff are here to help you and have been trained not to laugh at you (at least not until you’re a junior).

• Get Involved in OFF2PSU. Get your college career going with a big bang and attend all the fun OFF2PSU events that have been painstakingly thought up and coordinated by students just like you
