Pre-Professional Health students can major in
any discipline. For a student to declare that he/she is "Pre-Health"
is simply to indicate an intention to enter one of the health professions.
There are, however, certain courses that any medical school will
expect students to have taken in preparation for their programs,
and all Pre-Health students must complete this curriculum. The following
courses represent the bare minimum expected at the University of
Kansas. This is typical of most medical schools, although students
considering application to other schools should consult with those
schools so that there are no surprises.
One year of General Chemistry
One year of Organic Chemistry
One year of Physics
One year of upper-division Biology courses
(Note: each of these courses includes laboratory classes)
Entering pre-professional health studies represents a major
commitment. There are two factors that will determine your success
at PSU and your chances of being accepted in a health professional
school: Your preparation prior to entering PSU; and, your self-discipline
and determination. Regarding prior preparation, students who have
taken basic science and math courses in high school, and received
high scores on the ACT/SAT, will find the pre-professional course
work less demanding. However, perhaps what is most important is
a student's discipline and determination. A student with such commitment
from the first semester of college course work can succeed, and
the faculty at PSU are here to help you in that endeavor.
