Graphic images are referred to as photographic pictures, drawings, charts, illustrations and artwork. Graphic images have been used in instruction for many years. However, recent advances in technology have permitted the creation of desktop graphics much easier.
Generally, graphic images are used for many purposes such as using graphics instead of words for better comprehension.
Also, graphics are used to increase the retention of information, showing a process, contrast, and comparison.
In designing courses, graphic formats are mostly seen as an integral component in presenting factual information. Also, the use of graphics provides potential visuals for presenting complex information, which is not appealing and enjoyable to learners otherwise.
One note of caution, it is important to know that the effectiveness of using graphics in teaching and learning is confirmed only when graphics used are closely related to the content.
