My work is about observation, an unflinching and unapologetic view of
the complexities and hierarchies of social interactions. The physical core
of my work evolves from the form of the chair. Existing within the
liminal spaces of daily life the chair serves as silent witness and
surrogate to the vicissitudes of the everyday. The chair presents not
only a physical springboard, but also offers an intimate environment
through unfilled seats. Though the chairs are bare they are far from
empty. In this absence of presence, I believe the viewer is enticed to
exist within the waiting spaces. Here the “inert” forms become
experiential environments, creating a push-pull effect for the viewer
physically and psychologically.
At times adversarial, sometimes consolatory, always interconnected, the
forms speak of awkward moments of insecurity and uncertainty, as well
as moments of intense poetics and understanding that have combined
to create my view of the world. The cathartic experience of creating
these forms offers me a greater insight into chosen events and by doing
so a greater understanding within the social sphere I inhabit. It is my
hope that by interacting with these forms the viewer might make
similar connections and revelations about their own sense of being.
