Option I-Art Studio: This option is for those who wish to concentrate in one of the following studio areas: drawing, design, painting, printmaking, crafts, jewelry, weaving, ceramics, sculpture, or photography. It is appropriate for those interested in contemporary art issues and practices and is designed to support continued advanced study in studio art.
Option II-Art Education: This option is for those interested in research and practice in the field of art education. It is appropriate for those who are now art teachers or those interested in educational issues and aspects of art in public or private institutions. There is a strong studio component to this option.
The Department of Art offers excellent studio facilities and an experienced faculty, providing you major opportunities for personal artistic and professional development. You will explore your chosen studio area in an environment conducive to personal skill and stylistic development. You will develop artistic knowledge through the study of art history and contemporary art cultures. The Department of Art sponsors a fine art gallery with regularly changing exhibitions. Our ongoing visiting artist lecture and workshop program has brought many notable, contemporary artists to the campus to demonstrate and lecture on relevant artistic issues.
During the past several years, many graduate students in art have received assistantships, allowing them to gain teaching experiences in art or to be involved in other art learning experiences. You should make application for an assistantship early in the spring semester of the year.
For admission to the Master of Arts degree program, you should send ten (10) 35mm color slides of your artwork for the graduate faculty to review. A letter of intent addressed to the Chairperson, Department of Art, briefly stating your reasons for pursuing a masterıs degree should accompany the slides. It is Department policy to retain a graduate applicantıs slides as a permanent record if the student is admitted to the program.
