Dear Interested Student:

I am pleased to hear of your interest in studying art therapy at Pittsburg State University. Art therapy is a creative and rewarding allied health profession with career applications in schools, hospitals, mental health centers, hospices, rehabilitation facilities, as well as other settings. Art therapy professionals promote healing and growth utilizing the tools of art, knowledge of the creative process, and an understanding of human development, psychology, and potential.

Our department offers the B.S.E.D. degree with a major in Art Therapy. The art therapy coursework is guided by an experienced, registered art therapist, and the curriculum has been designated to meet or exceed the American Art Therapy Association's recommendations for undergraduate art therapy study and preparation for graduate work. Students who anticipate a career in art therapy are advised that a master's degree is necessary for professional practice, A.A.T.A. registration and eligibility for the nation-wide art therapy board certification exam. In addition to art therapy preparation, the art therapy program is structured to prepare students and meet standards for State of Kansas art teacher certification (K-12) for use in the public school system.

We believe that art is important in educating the whole person, emphasizing the need of developing personal problem solving skills, and actualizing the creative potential of each student. Our studios are well equipped, and each student has the opportunity to have close personal guidance and supervision by an instructor. Each member of the faculty is a highly trained, respected member of the professional art community with national reputations as artists and educators. Our art facility includes a fine gallery so each student has an opportunity to see art exhibits and to enjoy a firsthand view of other artists' work. The University also has an outstanding Department of Psychology and Counseling which provides the psychology coursework essential for the art therapy major and for continued art therapy study. As a student, you will have a rich blend of opportunities for personal growth, scholarly exploration, practical studio art experience, and professional career preparation.

I hope that you will take the opportunity to visit our University and the Department of Art. You are always welcome. If I can be of further assistance, please contact me.

Sincerely,

Larrie J. Moody, Ph.D.
