Family Group III
"In my work I try to balance an analysis of form and space with a spontaneity
of composition and paint handling."
In my painting I explore the relationship between illusionary depth and the two-dimensional arrangement of objects on the picture plane. The still life paintings are constructed with this relationship in mind. I am interested in the negative space that is created on the paintings’ surfaces as well as the space that pushes back into the painting. The relationship between the concrete vertical planes of the canvases and the illusionary horizontal planes of the pedestal top (even when it lies outside of the picture) is the central problem in these paintings. In the Family Group paintings a similar exploration is conducted, but the spaces are more amorphous. In these pieces I am concerned with the movement throughout. The forms are purposely ambiguous and are intended to loosely reference human figures, natural forms, and manmade structures, and the ways in which these things group themselves together.
