Parent Information about Student Life

Academics

Pittsburg State University strives to provide most academically superior learning environment as possible for every student.  Nine out of ten of our dedicated faculty have the highest degree possible in their field, and most classes are taught by a full professor.  Our 18:1 student to faculty ratio and small class sizes ensure your student will have the opportunity to form close relationships with and receive personal attention from faculty members.

PSU offers over 100 different academic programs.  If your student is not sure what to major in, Pittsburg State's Undeclared Major Program provides students with a gateway to explore academic areas and potential career options while fulfilling University requirements and earning credit toward a future college degree. The Undeclared Major Program is a legitimate academic department of the University, and with approximately 500 students in the program.

Grade Reports

Pittsburg State University issues grade reports and academic progress reports only through the GUS internet system.  Students may access their records from any computer with internet access using their GUS pin number.

Parental Access to Academic Records

The federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy act prohibits PSU from disclosing academic records for any student to a third party—including parents—without the student’s express written permission.  (Contact the Registrar’s Office for more information.)  It is best to determine with your student if and how grade reports and academic information will be handled within the family before classes begin.

Campus Safety

Pittsburg State University is committed to providing the safest campus environment for its students, faculty and staff as possible. The residence halls are locked 24 hours a day and feature a number of safety measures, including deadbolt and chain locks on all room doors.

The University Police provide 24-hour-a-day patrol protection to the campus, PSU Foundation property, parking lots, residence halls, and the fraternities and sororities.

PSU police officers are commissioned by authority of the State of Kansas and have the same law enforcement powers and responsibilities as the local police or sheriff in your home community. The officers are trained at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center and additionally are required to complete 40 hours of annual retraining to maintain state certification.

Potential criminal actions and other emergencies on campus can be reported directly by any student, faculty, or staff member from any on-campus phone by dialing 911 or using one of the campus call boxes located around campus. The off-campus phone number is 235-4624.

Information about crime statistics on campus can be found on the University Police and Parking web site.
