Campus Living

The residence halls play an important role in a student’s experiences at the University by developing a living community with each hall.  The halls provide an education, unique from that obtained in the classroom.  Students find themselves sharing their day-to-day experiences with new friends and living and growing as people by encountering students from different backgrounds and cultures.

PSU Residency Policy

PSU requires that all first-year students under the age of 21 live in the residence halls for their first two academic semesters and purchase a Seven Day Access Meal Plan or 14 Access Plan. All other students may live in housing of their choice.  Students who live within a 50-mile radius of Pittsburg and wish to live with parents or guardians, those with at least one year of military service, transfer students with more than 24 credit hours earned after high school and married students or students with dependent children may be exempted from this policy, but must contact University Housing before enrollment.

Contract

The housing contract is a legally binding document. Read the contract carefully to familiarize yourself with the terms and conditions.  A residence hall contract becomes effective upon the receipt and acceptance of the completed, signed contract with the required pre-payment. Only annual contracts are available.

Unless you are required by the Pittsburg State University Residency Policy to live in a residence hall and purchase a meal contract, you may be released from your housing contract with approval from University Housing at any time by payment of 35% of the remainder of your contract value and a weekly prorate for time occupied. Students must fill out a Cancellation Request form available at the University Housing Office.  Students who are required to live in the residence halls and purchase meal plans but feel they should be considered an exception must fill out an Off-Campus Request form. Requests may be granted if a student is suddenly faced with significant, unforeseen circumstances that profoundly affect a student’s ability to meet his/her contractual obligations or the student cannot be accommodated by the residence halls.

Meningitis Vaccination

A meningitis vaccination, or signed waiver is required for students living in the residence halls.  Effective for the Fall 2006 academic semester, the Kansas Board of Regents requires state universities to establish policies and procedures that will require all incoming students living in university housing to be vaccinated for meningitis or to sign a waiver indicating that they decline to take the vaccine.

Payments

Room and board payments must be made according to the payment plan your student selects.  A $30 fee will be charged if payment is not received by the 5th of each month.  If you are experiencing (or anticipate) difficulty making payments, contact the University Housing to make alternate payment plans.

Room Assignments

Room Assignments are based on a questionnaire completed by your student, contract receipt date and preferences in common with others.  Every attempt is made to place compatible roommates together.  However, it is difficult to determine who is likely to get along best before the start of the semester.  To give students the opportunity to work out differences, no room changes are allowed for the first two weeks.  If problems cannot be solved in that time, it is possible to change.  Students should contact the RA on their floor to arrange changes.

Roommates will receive information about each other before the semester begins, including a home address.  State law does not allow the release of phone numbers, but you can call directory assistance.  Your student is encouraged to contact his or her roommate in advance to discuss room decoration and who will bring what (you don’t want to have to reload the car with duplicate TV’s, stereos and furniture!)
