Graduate Assistant Appointment Instructions

INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM

July 3, 2006

TO: Vice Presidents, Directors, Deans, Chairpersons & Area Supervisors
FROM: John D. Patterson, Vice President for Administration & Campus Life
SUBJECT: Graduate Assistants

All Graduate Assistants shall be appointed through the Continuing and Graduate Studies Office with the "Graduate Assistant Payroll/Personnel Data Sheet." Instructions for "Appointing a Graduate Assistant" are available from the Continuing and Graduate Studies Office. Please utilize this process as appointments are made.

All non-instructional G.A.'s employed .4 time or more are listed as staff and therefore, will have their tuition based on resident fees at the per hour rate with no campus privilege fees assessed ($147 per credit hour). The Continuing and Graduate Studies Office inputs this information in the Enrollment Computer file for proper assessment of tuition.

Instructional Graduate Assistants

The academic salary will be $5,000 plus a 100% fee waiver of tuition charges for all full time appointments.
Academic Year Appointment is August 17, 2006 through May 19, 2007 - $250 for 20 bi-weekly periods ($5,000) with checks beginning September 8, 2006 and ending June 1, 2007.

Spring Semester Only Appointment is January 17, 2007 through May 19, 2007 - $277.78 for 9 bi-weekly periods ($2,500) with checks beginning February 9, 2007 and ending June 1, 2007.

Non-Teaching/Administrative Graduate Assistants (including other than General Fees funded)

Bi-Weekly Rate is $427. Since these G.A.'s are not eligible for a fee waiver, an extra $3,534 scholarship stipend for academic year appointments has been added to calculate the bi-weekly salary in lieu of waiver of fees.

Non-teaching/administrative graduate assistants are paid according to their start dates using $427 per bi-weekly period as their rate of pay. Other rates may be used if specified by the department (i.e., G.A.'s on grant funding).
REMINDER: First-time G.A.’s must complete an I-9 in Human Resource Services within three days of their
start date.
