English

The PSU English Department is an enjoyable place to learn, to work, and to create friendships and networks that last long beyond college years. We have fifteen full-time faculty members with diverse areas of study, several part-time faculty and a dedicated office staff. Our degree programs launch well-rounded readers and writers into their professional lives. Our facilities encourage students to work one-on-one with peer tutors and professors. Our departmental activities contribute to the friendly atmosphere we value.

Undergraduate Degree Programs

Bachelor of Arts, Major in English
If you want a Bachelor of Arts with a major in English, you must choose one of the department's four emphases: Traditional Emphasis, Creative Writing Emphasis Poetry, Creative Writing Emphasis Fiction, or Technical/Professional Writing Emphasis. You must also complete a minor. You should consult the most recent Pittsburg State University Catalog for all baccalaureate degrees and General Education degree requirements. If you plan to teach with this degree, you must complete teacher certification requirements.

Bachelor of Science in Education, Major in English
The Bachelor of Science in Education degree with a major in English is designed primarily to train prospective English teachers. A minor is not required.You should consult the appropriate sections of the most recent Pittsburg StateUniversity Catalog for the general description of the degree, the specific regulations concerning admission to teacher education, and General Education degree requirements for students preparing to teach secondary school. Admission to teacher education for secondary teaching majors requires a 2.75 GPA in approved common core courses.

Minor in English
A minor in English is a good complement to many fields of study, including History, Communication, and the sciences.  Students may choose from one of the department's four emphases: Traditional Emphasis, Creative Writing Emphasis Poetry, Creative Writing Emphasis Fiction, or Technical/Professional Writing Emphasis.

Graduate Degree Programs

Master of Arts, Major in English
If you want a Master of Arts with a major in English, you must choose one of the department's four emphases: Creative Writing Emphasis, Literature Emphasis, Professional Writing and Rhetoric Emphasis, or Teaching English in the Community College Emphasis. You must also present evidence of the successful completion of at least 24 semester hours of undergraduate English above the freshman level, preferably including survey courses in both English and American literature; one course in linguistics, modern grammar, or the history of the English language; and one upper division writing course.

Specialist in Education, Major in English
The degree of Specialist in Education with English as the major teaching field for community college teachers is offered by the Department of Special Services and Administration Studies in cooperation with the Department of English for people who already have a master's degree. Applicants for this program should consult the graduate advisor in the English Department to plan a course of study. The programs are flexible enough to enable all candidates to obtain the maximum strengthening in the subject matter of their teaching fields.
